Recently, the IT Helpdesk received multiple calls regarding a new console game, Destiny, developed by Bungie. To the game enthusiast, Destiny promises to be a great Sci-Fi shooter game on the scale that rivals top massively multiplayer online (MMO) games.
Gaming on UM Networks
Destiny’s servers were inaccessible from UM networks because of a design issue in how Destiny communicates with its remote servers. In short, the network traffic generated from Destiny was not being interpreted by network security devices as legitimate network traffic, causing the gaming traffic to be blocked.
UM Network Administrators contacted our network security vendor to discuss the necessary steps to grant access to Destiny’s servers. On Monday, September 15, Bungie developers released an upgrade which was tested by our security vendor and applied to our network configuration per the guidelines established by Bungie. Our security vendor cautioned us that if Bungie makes additional changes without informing the security community, gamers may experience similar, lengthy outages.
As a reminder, both gaming and video streaming services are allowed on UM networks, while performance is subject to the available bandwidth. For your best experience, use a wired network connection.
