Box Edit News: Version 2 Support Ends on October 31, 2015

Posted on: October 6th, 2015 by

Box Edit is a desktop application that allows you to edit or create files directly on Box, without having to download the file and upload it back to Box.  IT recently received an announcement concerning the end of support for Box Edit version 2.  If you use Box Edit, please take a moment to get up to speed.

Box Announcement

Box will end support of Box Edit version 2 on October 31, 2015, and require all version 2 users to upgrade to version 3. Box recently pushed an auto-update to Box Edit v2 users to v3; however, some users chose to stay on Box Edit v2. All Box Edit v2 users must manually upgrade to v3 in order to continue using Box Edit after the end of support date, October 31, 2015. Box Edit v2 will not work after this date, and Box will not provide fixes for critical bugs or security gaps.

Why is the move to Box Edit Version 3 important?

Browsers, such as Google’s Chrome, have started to phase out support for NPAPI plug-ins, which was the mechanism used by Box Edit to communicate between the web app and the desktop process. Box has re-architected Box Edit Version 3 so that it no longer uses NPAPI plug-ins, which improves the security and reliability of the solution.

I use Box Sync.  Do I need to do anything?

You are all set.  Box Sync is not impacted.

I am the technology lead in my department.  What steps should I take now?
